Paul Bodden is currently working in mixed-media assemblage and collage using acrylic media, paper, fabric, cardboard, canvas, wood, among other materials, including needle and thread. His three-dimensional work is influenced by stage construction projects he did in childhood as well as his adult experience in theater. His work is always an exploration of color, texture, and form as well as the spiritual relationship between light and dark.
As a young child, Paul experienced a moment of connection to a vast darkness filled with light, presence, and breath. Not long after, upon being taken to a cathedral for the first time, he recognized that the building was an attempt to capture that same experience which he later came to know as “spirit”. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he was also attracted to the work of Mark Rothko at that time.
As an adult, all of Paul’s creative expression, including music and writing, has been involved, consciously or not, in the exploration of this early experience of light-filled darkness.
